I met the owners years ago when I was organising the Westgarth Film Festival. They still own the building, while Palace runs the cinema.

I'm not interested in ethnic cinema, per se. I like collages and the idea of grabbing various strands (bits of home movies/found footage) to see what combined effect they might produce or what, hitherto unseen, connections they might reveal.

Y'know that 'beating of butterfly wings in one corner of the earth can create a hurricane in another part' scenario? Somehow mapping infinitesimal information, images, social context might reveal something. Then again, it might not!

I know you know the Westgarth, but if you end up following this road any further (diasporas etc.) it might be worth tracking down the previous owners too - IIRC it was owned for many years by an older Greek couple.

Anyway, this is interesting.

What is the thinking here - to mirror the way "culture" spreads out with the "maps" being created?

It's really interesting to see the evolution of how we think about "history" over the last twenty or thirty years - from a vocation that concerned itself, supposedly, with only "facts," to one that is now, as Hayden White argues, admittedly an "imaginative" act. By choosing (or ignoring) our own vantage points and by choosing what to include and exclude from the narrative, we are "creating" a historical document, not just recording "history".

I think the recognition of amateur film as a valid form of historical document goes some way to redressing these inherent biases (though certainly we should still proceed with caution).

History-in-print-form is still in the midst of this debate, I think (Keith Windschuttle and the "black armband" stuff re Australian aboriginals is what immediately springs to mind), but it's almost as film theory has gone beyond this point. This welcoming of amateur film into the realm of "real" history and anthropology is a definite step out from the mire IMO.

(Or is this still very much on the fringes? I guess I'm way out of touch with media/film theory these days.)

Interesting and... daunting at the same time. I've been thinking for a while; What happens to us as (aspiring) professionals when everyone is a prosumer? Perhaps we chose the wrong field!!!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for your advice, I really really appreciate the time you took to give me such considered feedback. I blogged a response http://nons3quitur.wordpress.com/2008/05/13/feedback/

See you Thurs.
